Mt Buller Snow Trip (19/07/2026)

The Swiss club snow trip is on again this year for Swiss Club members, Swiss Society of Victoria and their guests. The event has been generously discounted by a donation from the Swiss Society of Victoria. Join family and friends in the comfort of a fully equipped privately chartered bus to Mount Buller, right up to the town square. The bus will depart Melbourne at 6am including an extra pick up point in Lilydale 6:40am) which should have you on the slopes by 10am where you have the day to explore skiing, hiking or tobogganing with your family and friends before we depart Mount Buller at approx 3.40pm that day. Your ticket includes transport, park entry and gratuity but you will need to organise any activities or equipment hire privately when we arrive.

Melbourne - Mt Buller - Melbourne
The journey by bus to Mt Buller passes through the Yarra Valley and the high country to take in the spectacular views of the mountains and the snowy landscape. We make a brief 10 to 15 minutes stop for a restroom break en route to the Mt Buller Village Square, ensuring that you can fully maximize your time on the mountain.

You will arrive at Mt Buller around 10:00-10:30 AM. From here, the day is yours; indulge in your chosen activity and explore the region.
You will depart for Melbourne at around 3:40 PM and arrive in Melbourne CBD around 8:30 PM.

The anticipated schedule is subject to the weather and traffic, not guaranteed. Thus, early arrival or delay might occur. It is advised not to book flights departing on the same day.

**Itinerary Suggestions:

1. Sightseeing: You can purchase a sightseeing chairlift ticket online or upon arrival for a single return ride to see the stunning view from the Northside slopes. It departs from the Horse Hill car park where is connected to the Village Square with the free shuttle buses. There is a café/light meal available at the summit, which is perfect for enjoying the scenery.

2. Entertainment: You can purchase a Tobogganing park ticket to enjoy the activity or take part in a dog sledding tour. The opening dates are subject to the weather conditions. Please check with the reception of Mt Buller.

3. Skiing: The lift pass is essential for skiers, which is not included in this product. Please review your options for lift passes and ordering any hire equipment directly with the Mt Buller website for further information. https://www.mtbuller.com.au/winter

*Please note the SSV and SCV have coordinated affordable transport to and from Mt Buller Village and accept no liability for your chosen activities whilst on the mountain. We encourage you to check local conditions with the village information office and enjoy the day within your limitations. All skiing equipment and safety gear is available for hire at Mt Buller and can be booked online prior to your arrival. All participants must return to the village meeting point at the designated times and may be liable to source alternative transport home should they not make the published timelines.

Swiss National Day Lantern Parade (01/08/2026)

Join fellow SCV members and their guests at the annual SCV lantern parade before the formal SCV dinner commences. We will meet at the clubrooms from 5:15pm and depart there by 5:30pm and meet at the Federation Square steps facing Swanston Street at 5:40pm commencing the parade along Flinders Walk through to Batman Avenue and back up to the club for some light refreshments.

Although this is a free event for SCV members, kindly register for the event so we can make sure we have enough lantern and a light refreshment when we return and maybe some goodies for the kids.

NOTE:

If you would like to stay for the formal dinner at 6:30pm you will need to book separately for this separate event in the Edelwyss Restaurant.

Members booking for the dinner event are resigned to booking one ticket for each log in as a member. If you have a family membership you will need to log in and book and then your spouse will need to log in and book also. If you have a family member U18 of a member you can email claude@swissclubvic.com.au to register them for free also.

Bagger Drama (2024) is a celebrated Swiss drama directed by Piet Baumgartner.

The filmography of Zurich-based director Piet Baumgartner is a very multifaceted one, with dramatic shorts, music videos and 2023’s feature documentary The Driven Ones, which played at numerous festivals including IDFA. Little than a year later, he’s back on the circuit with his fiction feature debut Bagger Drama, selected in San Sebastián’s New Directors strand. It should play well in arthouse circles, thanks to its strong premise and committed cast.

Much like fellow New Directors entry My Eternal Summer, this is the story of a family unit of three – mother, father, young adult son – dealing with loss and the communication problems arising from it, only this time no one is on the verge of death: the passing has already occurred (the couple’s teenage daughter succumbed to injuries sustained during a canoeing accident), and the plot kicks in one year later.

Everyone tries to move on, chiefly by pouring their heart and soul into the family business, which revolves around excavators (baggers in German). It’s hard work, albeit with some levity thrown in on occasion, courtesy of a performance that involves a dance routine between machines (a visual Baumgartner already dealt with in Through My Street, the award-winning music video he made for the artist Rio Wolka, who also composed this film’s score). And yet, there’s unspoken tension bubbling beneath the professional façade: the mother is increasingly depressed, the son would like to study in the US but feels dutybound to help his parents, and the father finds himself drawn to the village’s new choir director…

We catch up with these three on a yearly basis, each chapter introduced by a shot of the river where the fatal accident occurred: a fitting image for the passage of time, as everything flows (or at least is supposed to flow), as well as the family’s inability to move on due to failure of communication. This is perhaps best shown in a scene where the father, having mastered the local dialect after living in the area for years, still finds himself more comfortable opening up in his native English – and not to his wife or child.

The pained expressions of all three are captured in almost excruciating close-ups which highlight the nearly wordless chemistry between the actors: Bettina Stucky and Phil Hayes give a lived-in quality to a marriage that is silently eroding, while Vincent Furrer, in his first film role since 2010’s Stationspiraten, shot when he was a teenager, successfully transitions in to adult acting with a role that requires him to literally come of age on screen, delicately handling even the most overused tropes (the scene where the son comes out to his mother is a great example of laughter hiding great pain).

They may be in the excavation business, but they’re unable to dig below the surface when it comes to matters removed from the workplace. The metaphor is not subtle, but the emotional sincerity that transpires from every single carefully planned shot lends it a certain weight, beyond that of the machine itself as it tries to smooth out the remnants of a sorrowful past. Until the river shows up again, leading to a new year of repressed grief, and the memories start flooding the precarious family balance one more time.

Many German-speaking Swiss are therefore having a crisis. Including fifty-six-year-old Walter Egli, who works for the Federal Police and must ensure that the transition to monolingualism is carried out properly. Although he hardly speaks any French himself, he is sent to Ticino with a French-speaking partner to uncover a Ticino resistance group that is fighting the new law by all means necessary.
